“Molte storie delle immagini insistono sulla luce e sul tema del visivo quali elementi generatori dell’estetica figurativa occidentale. Ma è possibile ribaltare questo approccio gnoseologico e provare a ipotizzare che le immagini più prototipiche, quelle più radicate nel nostro inconscio ottico, nascano dall’ombra e utilizzino la cecità come potente metafora della “verità”, non solo iconografica? Partendo dal mito della caverna platonica, nelle sue differenti declinazioni grafiche e letterarie, per poi passare allo studio della camera oscura, intesa come sovrastorica “forma simbolica”, il libro rintraccia un sentiero alternativo in cui le opere di Robert Motherwell, le installazioni di James Turrell, i dipinti di Marco Tirelli, le fotografie di Abelardo Morell e di Hiroshi Sugimoto, solo per citare alcuni degli autori analizzati, sembrano stringere un legame perturbante e inedito con le immagini parastatiche preistoriche, con alcune forme di cecità congenita o acquisita e con i disturbi ottici degli acromati polinesiani, suggerendo che forse, per vedere meglio la realtà, sia necessario chiudere i propri occhi.”
