Se le donne sono confinate nello spazio domestico, possono sovvertirlo? A partire da questa domanda il testo prende in esame le riflessioni politiche e le proposte architettoniche e urbanistiche di pensatrici attive negli Stati Uniti tra il 1840 e il 1920. Nel volume vengono presi in esame, in particolare, i lavori di Catherine Beecher, Melusina Fay Peirce, Marie Howland, Jane Addams, Charlotte Perkins Gilman e Alice Constance Austin e le proposte abitative concrete di Topolobampo, Hull House e Llano del Rio, per sottolineare come la messa in discussione delle forme dell’abitare sia pensata in chiave politica e possa offrire prospettive inedite alla critica della separazione tra spazio pubblico e spazio privato. Scopo del testo è anche quello di complicare la genealogia del femminismo, mostrando come accanto alla battaglia per il suffragio, e a volte intrecciate ad essa, si sviluppino critiche articolate alle condizioni materiali delle donne e proposte significative per migliorarle.
