The solid state physics could be one of the most daunting topics in physics and engineering , but destined to be encountered. This book presents all of the topics in undergraduate-level solid state physics in a clear fashion, dense with explanatory or just plain entertaining footnotes, which makes it much more appropriate for beginners than the academia standard Kittel’s “Solid State Physics.” This may be the best introductory book for learning solid state physics. It is certainly the most fun to read. In addition, this book delves deep into the topics related to magnetic materials (not trivial topics as people think), which are often discussed in facile manner in Politecnico’s Physics II (Fisica II) courses.

This is an intuitively motivated presentation of many topics in classical mechanics and related areas of control theory and calculus of variations. All topics throughout the book are treated with zero tolerance for unrevealing definitions and for proofs which leave the reader in the dark. Some areas of particular interest are: an extremely short derivation of the ellipticity of planetary orbits; a statement and an explanation of the “tennis racket paradox”; a heuristic explanation (and a rigorous treatment) of the gyroscopic effect; a revealing equivalence between the dynamics of a particle and statics of a spring; a short geometrical explanation of Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle, and more.
As someone who actually read this book, I am greatly indebted to the author Mark Levi, who really helped me build intuitions for rigid body dynamics, something that other mundane mainstream textbooks couldn’t do.

This best-selling classical mechanics (corresponds to courses like “Meccanica Lagrangiana”, “Meccanica Razionale”, “Meccanica Analitica” in Italian university curriculum) text since the first edition released in 1960s, written for the advanced undergraduate one- or two-semester course, provides a complete account of the classical mechanics of particles, systems of particles, and rigid bodies. I am writing to express my strong interest in the acquisition of “Real Analysis: Measure Theory, Integration, and Hilbert Spaces (Princeton Lectures in Analysis Book 3)” for the library’s collection. As a student pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, I have found that the study of real analysis is essential and useful to my academic development. This book, written by Elias M. Stein and Rami Shakarchi, is widely recognized as a standard text in the field, and its inclusion in the library’s holdings would be of tremendous benefit to engineering students. Currently, the book is available only in the DISMA library, and is accessible only to faculty members and students majoring in mathematical engineering. As a non-mathematics major, I am unable to access this valuable resource through the DISMA library. By adding the book to the Central Engineering Library’s collection, students from all engineering disciplines will have access to this fundamental text.
I believe that the acquisition of this book would greatly enhance the library’s collection, and help to ensure that engineering students at our university have access to the resources necessary to excel in their studies. The book’s clear and concise presentation of complex mathematical concepts, along with its numerous examples and exercises, make it an ideal text for self-study, as well as for use in coursework.
